Between Gibraltar and Portugal lies the most southerly of Spains Costas, Costa de la Luz the "Coast of Light". The holiday beaches are wider here, backed by sand dunes which breaks the winds from the Atlantic. The same winds make it a great water sports area that is high on the list for surfing, windsurfing and kiteboarding. Almost one third of this region is natural parks and protected areas with Donana National Park being the largest in Spain. Some of the main beach resorts for holidays are Islantilla, Cadiz, Conil de la Frontera, La Antilla, Tarifa (famous for Wind and Kitesurfing) and Isla Canela by Ayamonte, the town that sits on the river border with Portugal. The main city is Seville ( a much loved venue for city breaks ) and well worthy of a day trip to see the Alcazar Palace, Giralda tower and Cathedral amongst other historic landmarks. This is where tapas was invented so taste and try before you head home for the night! Also worth a visit is Jerez, home of sherry and also the Royal Andalucian School of Equestrian Art with its popular horse displays and the city of Cadiz where the narrow streets and squares of the old town, which is almost surrounded by the sea, are filled with character.
